I painted constantly when I was growing up and have always thought of myself as an artist although it was not until I was in my 40’s that I was able to do my fine art painting degree at The University of Gloucestershire, since then, I paint every day.

My work is abstract and semi abstract, sometimes with hybridized versions of objects from my daily life subsumed into the abstraction and iconic symbolism from my subconscious. I work intuitively and the concept is generated through the process. Painting one shape / colour next to another affects the balance and signals edits and changes and through this process the work finds its own direction. Whilst painting I’m remembering key moment in my life and listening to music which connects to the painting – one abstract thing feeding into another, and there has to be a sort of poetic harmony .

Painting for me is mysterious, another language, hard to define and open to interpretation, if I get it right, I’m happy.

I work in oils, acrylics, pastels and mixed media, usually covering the canvas in areas of neutral colours as the first layer of the painting, which then leads me in to add subsequent layers of marks and colours in increasing vibrancy; building up the painting in this way, the work finds its own direction and identity.
